In an increasingly digital world, access to technology and online services is no longer a luxury, it’s a necessity. Yet one in four people in the UK still face digital exclusion, preventing them from applying for jobs, managing finances, or even speaking to a GP online. The government has set out to change this with its Digital Inclusion Action Plan, and now they’re inviting people to help shape it.
Why Digital Inclusion Matters
From banking and job applications to healthcare and education, digital access is key to modern life. But for millions across the UK, lack of digital skills and access to affordable technology creates real barriers. Research shows that digitally excluded people often pay more for essential services like insurance, travel, and food, sometimes up to 25% more than those online.
The government recognises that closing this gap is essential for economic growth, social mobility, and overall quality of life. That’s why they’ve launched a Call for Evidence, seeking input from businesses, charities, councils, and individuals to refine their approach.
What’s in the Plan?
The Digital Inclusion Action Plan: First Steps sets out key initiatives to boost digital access and skills across the UK. This includes:
Training & Skills Support – Google and BT will provide free digital skills training.
Connectivity & Tech Access – Vodafone has pledged to connect one million people through affordable services and donated technology.
Local Investment – New funding will help councils and charities support low-income groups and the elderly.
Breaking down digital barriers isn’t just about fairness, it’s about unlocking opportunity for individuals, businesses, and the economy. Improving digital skills and access, will boost employability, drive business growth, and enhance public services. A digitally inclusive UK means stronger communities, a more competitive workforce, and a thriving economy where everyone can benefit from the opportunities of the digital age.
With the right policies and collaboration, we can close the digital divide and build a future where no one is left behind.
How You Can Get Involved
The Call for Evidence is open to everyone, including local authorities, businesses, charities, community groups, and individuals. Whether you’re working on a digital inclusion project or have insights on what works best, this is your chance to influence government policy and help shape a more inclusive digital future.
